Rothko in Florence
From 14 March to 23 August 2026, Palazzo Strozzi presents a major exhibition dedicated to Mark Rothko, a central figure in 20th-century American art, featuring an exceptional selection of works, including large-scale paintings never before shown in Italy. The exhibition brings together works from prestigious private collections and leading international museums such as the MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Tate in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
Curated by Christopher Rothko and Elena Geuna, the exhibition traces the evolution of Rothko’s artistic journey, from his early figurative works, in dialogue with Expressionism and Surrealism, to the celebrated abstract canvases of the 1950s and 1960s. A profound exploration of colour and light, understood as tools capable of creating spaces for contemplation and introspection, in a constant balance between abstraction and spirituality.
The exhibition project extends beyond the galleries of Palazzo Strozzi, involving the city of Florence through two satellite sections: the Museo di San Marco, where the works engage in dialogue with the frescoes by Beato Angelico, and the Vestibule of the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana designed by Michelangelo. The exhibition is promoted and organised by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, in collaboration with the Museo di San Marco and the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana.
Exhibition hours: daily from 10.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.; the ticket office closes one hour before
